The problem - global warming

Almost everyone has heard about global warming. It's on the TV every day. It’s all around us.

The phrase "global warming" is misleading. What is really happening is better termed "climate change". Not only will the average temperature increase, but the climate will also become more variable, with a much greater frequency of extreme weather events occurring.

Why is global warming happening?

The amount of oil, gas and electricity we consume has dramatically increased over the years for a number of reasons. The world’s population has expanded and continues to grow resulting in us using more fuel to heat our homes. We also use more transport as part of our daily lives with more people owning and driving cars than ever before and more people flying as a result of air travel becoming less expensive.

To make matters worse, the world is now planting a very small proportion of the trees that it used to plant (in the UK for example, we only plant 25% of the trees we used to plant 30 years ago)

Our 1st Project – Cambodia

Our first Global Trees project will concentrate on raising funds to help a very worthwhile cause in Tonal Sap, Cambodia. Planting trees in this region will bring a huge number of benefits to the local community and surrounding area. These include not only offsetting the damage done by carbon emissions, but also regenerating the area protecting the forest and its inhabitants from the effects of deforestation. Planting trees also provides the local community with an opportunity to benefit economically as they can harvest the forests resources in years to come.

Tree Seedling Production in Tonal Sap, Cambodia

The people of Tonal Sap, Cambodia agreed to establish a tree seedlings nursery to replenish their flooded forest, and to ensure that the poor families benefited from the production. Those involved in seedling production are the most vulnerable and poorest families. They first collected and germinated seeds, then inserted the young plants in soil-filled plastic cups or bags. One person was selected to be responsible to lead and direct the activity, to manage the nursery and to take care of the seedlings.

So by collecting and recycling used printer cartridges and mobile phones you can earn money for your school, offset your carbon emissions and help areas like Tonal Sap in Cambodia develop long term and sustainable income through forest regeneration (planting trees).

The solution – Recycle and Plant Trees

There are lots of different ways you can help the environment and at the same time save or earn extra money for your school. There are millions of printer cartridges and mobile phones lying around in houses and businesses. If your school is not already a member of Recycool click here to sign up and if you are a member and need a collection simply click here or call .

A mobile phone has a higher value than a printer cartridge, so phones will raise the most money.

Loads of people have unwanted mobiles in their houses so ask parents and friends to participate.

The best way to raise extra funds for your school is to get local businesses to take part in Recycool. We will collect directly from them and allocate all monies raised to your account. We even have letters and posters to help you sign up supporting businesses.

Laser and inkjet cartridges are found in printers, fax machines and desktop copiers- so if anyone you know works in an office or has a home computer, ask for their used laser and inkjet cartridges!

So what are you waiting for? Recycle your mobile phones and used printer cartridges and help us plant TREES!

You can help the environment in other ways than just recycling mobile phones and printer cartridges, they include:

  • Conserving the amount of electricity & heating you use
  • Finding another way to get to school (car sharing with someone else may be an option?)
  • Buy and use energy-efficient appliances

Climate Change Facts!

  • 1998 was the warmest year on record, since 1861.
  • The earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.6 °C (1°F) during the last century.
  • Global warming is altering the number of plant and animal species with scientists predicting many will vanish if temperatures continue to rise.
  • Northern Hemisphere spring and summer sea-ice extent has decreased by about 10 to 15% since the 1950s. It is likely that there has been about a 40% decline in Arctic sea-ice thickness during late summer to early autumn in recent decades and a considerably slower decline in winter sea-ice thickness.
  • The world's forests will be altered by changes in the weather. Rising temperatures will increase the risk of forest fires, flooding and proliferation of diseases and pests that attack tree species.
  • World Wildlife Fund research shows that, under the worst-case scenario for global warming, the coral populations of the Great Barrier Reef will collapse by 2100.
  • A Pentagon study concluded that abrupt climate change from global warming could trigger war among nations for food, water and energy, posing new threats.
  • Greenland's icy mountains and entire ice cap could disappear in the next 1,000 years due to global warming. If this melting occurs, ocean levels will rise by seven metres, drowning low-level coastlines around the world.
